Empty chairs in the front row during the Jharkhand Foundation Day function brought to the fore the growing dissidence among the ruling UPA allies in the state. Four ministers — Kamlesh Singh, Harinarain Rai, Chandra Prakash Choudhary and Enos Ekka — (all Independent MLAs) stayed away from the function, protesting their names not being included in the UPA’s steering committee formed to oversee the state Government’s functions. In reply to a query as to why he boycotted the grand function, Ekka, who was in his constituency at Simdega, said: “I do not enjoy being part of a tamasha.”
Though coinciding with the 107th birth anniversary of tribal hero Birsa Munda, the Foundation Day function failed to live up to its hype. Many chairs remained empty and the crowd response, too, varied from lukewarm to cold.
However, there was no dearth of rhetoric at the function held at the Morahabadi Maidan. Leaders present on the dais reiterated their resolve to work for the all-round development of the state.
Speaking on the occasion, JMM president Shibu Soren, the chief guest of the function, said: “A steering committee has been formed. Now, the Government will work in accordance with its recommendations.” Soren is the chairman of the committee.
The Congress, meanwhile, not losing out on the opportunity, launched a Padyatra protesting against Chief Minister Madhu Koda’s “failure to deliver at the top post”. The Congress leaders, led by state party in charge Ajay Maken, started the Padyatra from the Raj Bhawan to the CM’s residence and handed over a memorandum to Koda.
“Roads are in poor shape. Power cuts are frequent. Crime is on the rise. Extremist violence had remained unabated. The Central funds are not utilised. Corruption is rampant,” read the memorandum, calling upon Koda to improve governance and show result within next two months.
“Otherwise, we will be compelled to chalk out our own course of action,” Maken told the mediapersons after meeting Governor Syed Sibtey Razi.
Koda, meanwhile, admitted the performance of his Government was not satisfactory. “Since we are leading a coalition Government, we have a collective responsibility. On my part, I can assure you I will do my best to come up to the expectations of all allies,” Koda told The Indian Express.
