Chandigarh, June 11: The closing timings of discotheques in the city have been extended by one hour, it is learnt.
While a few weeks ago as per the instructions of the former UT inspector-general of police, the discos were told to close down by 10.30 pm, not they can remain open till 11.30 p.m. The discos were virtually non-functional with the decision and the disco-owners had raised a lot of hue and cry.
Confirming the new timings, UT Deputy Commissioner-cum-District Magistrate M. Ramsekhar, when contacted, said that the official orders were yet to be passed to this effect. quot; The specific instructions will be passed by the district magistrate in consultation with the police, quot; he added.
He said that it was improper to have separate timings for the discotheques with that of the restaurants and pubs, which close by around 11.30 p.m. after taking the last order of the day at 11 p.m. Morever, the discos do not serve liquor, he added. Meanwhile, sources said that Senior Superintendent of Police City has already passed on the instructions to the Station House Officers SHOs of the respective police stations to allow the discotheques open till 11.30 pm.
Presently there are no separate laws and guidelines governing the discos and they are considered a part of general business. Sources said the administration was considering framing separate rules for the discos.
