Dilip, Sandeep back in squad

Experience is back in fashion at the Indian Hockey Federation IHF, as reported in this daily. Following trials in Bangalore today, 18 were selected from the 32 probables, to represent the country at the six-nation Champions Challenge tournament in Boom, Belgium, next month. And back in the fold were players like ex-skipper and ace defender Dilip Tirkey and drag-flicker Sandeep Sigh.

Also, of course, not in the squad are stalwarts like Gagan Ajit Singh and Viren Rasquinha.

With five-six players in the squad in their early twenties, the average age of the squad falls considerably. And Dilip Tirkey has not got his captaincy back. It is with Prabodh Tirkey.

Dilip Tirkey and Sandeep Singh 8212; who is back from a life-threatening gunshot wound 8212; were not included in the Azlan Shah tournament because they missed the camp.

Adrian D8217;Souza is the goalkeeper, with experienced players like William Xalco and Bimal Lakra ahead of him, with youngsters like Damandeep Singh, Roshan Minz, Bharat Sikara, Vikram Kant and Sardara Singh ahead.

According to a senior selector, the probables played in matches in the morning and afternoon. In the morning they played in two teams, while in the next session they played against an Army XI as the selectors watched.

The squad will travel to Dusseldorf for a ten-day camp before moving over to Belgium.
