May Day celebrations

The Bal Mazdoor Union and the NGO Butterflies organised a march in the walled city on the occasion of May Day. Hundreds of child labourers walked through the streets demanding an improvement in their economic conditions so that they wouldn’t have to work. The march began from the Shaheed Bhagat Singh Terminal and passed through Daryaganj before ending at Red Fort. The Joint Committee for May Day, comprising of around 30 organisations, led a march to Parliament on Friday. Around 1,000 workers participated in the rally which concluded with a cultural programme.

Earlier, the committee organised street-corner meetings and programmes in industrial areas like Wazirpur and Samaipur Badli. The Indian National Shramik Congress also organised a rally to commemorate the role of workers. Workers from various industries and banks, DDA and CPWD participated in the event.

The Central PWD Karamchari Sangthan submitted a memorandum to the Urban Affairs and Employment Minister on the occasion.

Disruption in power supply

Electricity supply will be affected between 10 a.m. and 2 p.m. on May 4 in the following areas: East Patel Nagar, Pusa Road, Karol Bagh, Prasad Nagar, New Rajinder Nagar and Old Rajinder Nagar. This is on account of the Delhi Vidyut Board undertaking repair work at the Shankar Road transformer.

Rly staff `Tool Down’

Railway engineers and technicians observed a one-day token `Tool Down’ on Friday. The strike was called jointly by the Engineers Association of Indian Railways and the Technical Employees Association of the Railways to protest against the disparity in pay scales and the poor promotion avenues.

Basketball selection trials

The Delhi Basketball Association is holding selection trials for the Delhi State Junior Basketball team for the 49th Junior National Championship. The trials will be held on May 8 at the National Stadium basketball courts. Boys and girls born after January 1, 1980, are eligible for the trials.

CBS applications till May 9

The College of Business Studies has extended the last date for receiving applications till May 9. Students have to send the drafts in favour of the Principal, College of Business Studies, Delhi.

DVB complaint centres

The Delhi Vidyut Board will attend to complaints relating to electricity supply, power theft and other breakdowns at the number 1911. This will be functional round the clock. Complaints regarding power thefts and corrupt DVB officials can be lodged at 3234115. Counters for paying billsTHE DVB cash collection centres, including the bulk supply cash collection counter at Shakti Sadan, will remain open on May 2, 3, 9, 16, 23 and May 30 from 8.30 a.m. to 2 p.m.. Consumers can pay their electricity bills at these counters.

Health camp organised

A free health camp was organised at a Kirti Nagar jhuggi cluster on Friday by the Government Girls Senior Secondary School. Around 300 people were treated at the camp. A literacy campaign was also launched in the slum.

Vidyut Board gets advice THE PHD Chamber of Commerce and Industry has suggested that the Delhi Vidyut Board should delegate billing at the district level. According to the PHDCCI, this will ensure speedier collections and ensure responsibility and accountability. It has further stated that the high power rates in Delhi are the reason behind rampant power thefts.

Diplomas handed out

The 37th post graduate diploma course in guidance and counselling organised by the National Council of Educational Research and Training (NCERT) concluded on Thursday. Thirty students received their diplomas.
