The plush green outfield, the stifling khakhi presence, the rush to grab complimentary passes 8212; there are certain unmistakable aspects always attached to the Ferozeshah Kotla Stadium as an international match approaches. But this time around, there is more. The grand stand towards the left of sight-screen on the opposite end catches the eye 8212; for the wrong reasons.
The Delhi and District Cricket Association has allowed a sizeable area towards the left of the sight-screen to be covered with bright red hoardings of a telecom company as part of in-stadia advertisements, failing to remember that a Test match is played with a red ball. To make matters worse, even the seats are red in colour.
The overwhelming red colour in the backdrop may disturb the batsmen and the fact that the hoardings are from the top to the middle tiers means that even fielders will have a problem sighting the ball in the air. It will be interesting to see what match referee Ranjan Madugalle, who takes over from his Sri Lankan counterpart Roshan Mahanama for the Test series, has to say on that.
Manu Nayyar, former Delhi cricketer and now a BCCI match referee, feels there are major chances that the colour of the stand will have to be modified or changed. 8220;It8217;s an absolute distraction 8212; confusing for the batsmen and even the fielders. If I were to officiate here, I would not have allowed the hoardings to be put up. And I am sure Madugalle will have something to say to the organisers,8221; he said.
DDCA sports secretary Sunil Dev admitted that the overwhelming red colour in the background is disturbing.
8220;I had objected to it when the process was on but I was told that they have got an approval from the ICC. If the match-referee raises objections, then we will make some last-minute arrangements.8221;
