Wired up
If a traditional take on things is more your cup of tea, Ayush Kasliwal has the perfect table to set that cup on. A furniture design graduate from the National Institute of Design, Ahmedabad, he uses local crafts to make artefacts, accessories, the textiles and furniture at his studio in Jaipur. “We use stone, marble, laquer, wood etc. We even have glasswork and weaving incorporated in our work. I get bird cages to be made into outdoor lamps. Lightweight and low maintainance, these are ideal for the garden. We used wires to make the table, there are candlestands made of stone. People tell us what they are looking for and we get it done,”he says.

Would you like a ‘stooch’ for your home? Confused? Trupti Mehta, who is pursuing a post-graduate diploma in industrial design from National Institute of Design, Ahmedabad, explains, “It is a folding chair and a stool, so the name, stooch. It is a multifunctional object. It is a chair but when you fold and put the back rest down it becomes a stool.” With the name decoded, it could be easier to warm up to the red and steel sculpture. Through its inanimate beauty, the ‘stooch’ according to its creator depicts emotion nothing less than love itself. “I used the colour red to get this across.” This artistic variation of the humble chair got Trupti a place at Europe’s top design school, Istituto Marangoni, thanks to the Elle Decor International Design Awards this year. “I would like to prototype it soon. And open my own store as soon as I get back,” says Trupti.
