CHANDIGARH, Oct 8: DAV COLLEGE, Sector 10, Chandigarh, registered a 3-1 victory over Government College, Ludhiana, to lift the title in the men’s team title in the Punjab University Inter-College badminton championship which concluded at PU Campus here today. Government College, Ludhiana got the second position.
The hard fought victory over SD-32 College shuttlers yesterday, did not sapped the strength out of agile and speedy Ashish Sharma, who scored a facile 15-0, 15-1 win over Prabhjit Singh of Government College, Ludhiana, to give a flying start to his team. In the second singles, DAV’s Rajat Johal did not had to sweat to outplay Sunil Sekhri 15-8, 15-4, to consolidate the lead (2-0).
In the doubles, however, the pair of Gurdev and Gursev lost tamely to Sunil and Amandeep 2-15, 0-15, in a one-sided affair.
In the reverse singles, Vikas Mahajan’s experienced enabled him to prevail over spirited Amandeep Sekhri 15-8, 15-10, to win the crown.
SD College, Chandigarh blanked DM College, Moga 3-0 to win the third place.
Ashish Sharma scored a convincing 15-3, 15-1 win over Gaurav Mittal while Ashirwad outclassed Lakhbir Singh 15-3, 15-2 in the second singles. In the doubles Ashish and Ashirwad combined well to beat Tejinderpal and Jaswinder 15-4, 15-1.
The women’s title went to MCM DAV College, Chandigarh, who defeated Khalsa College for Women, Ludhiana, 2-1. KCW, Ludiana took the second spot.
Pallavi lost to Nazma 3-11, 0-11. But in the doubles Pallavi paired with Bhawna to beat Nazma and Anu 17-16, 15-12 while in the reverse singles Bhawna got the better of Anu 11-1, 11-3.
Punjab University Campus beat GCG-11, 2-1 to bag the third place.
Garima Thakur lost to Nirmal Kaur 11-13, 8-11. Geeta and Jyotsana defeated Jaswinder and Nirmal 15-4, 15-1. Geeta Prajapati outplayed Tara Chauhan 11-1, 11-1.
Boxing meet
The 21st Chandigarh state junior boxing championship will be held at Sector 46 Sports Complex on October 24 and 25.
According to a press release, during the meet, Chandigarh team will be selected to take part in the 31st junior national boxing meet to be held at Kohima (Nagaland) from November 9.
Players born in 1981 and 1982 are eligible to take part in the meet. Weighing-in would be held on October 24 at 8 a.m., and players should report to Shiv Singh, boxing coach at the venue.
Skating tourney
More than 200 skaters will vie for top honours in the the fourth Panchkula District roller skating championship which will begin tomorrow at Hansraj Public School, Sector 6, Panchkula.
The competition will be held in roller hockey, speed and road races.
Taekwondo meet
Competition for taekwondo colour belts will be held on October 10 at Hosedfed Complex, Phase X, SAS Nagar, under the aegis of Punjab Taekwondo Association.
Easy for YPS
Yadavindra Public School, SAS Nagar scored a convincing nine-wicket win over Stepping Stone-9 in the under-12 boys category in the Edmund Rice cricket tournament held at St John’s High School-26 today.
In another match st John’s School-26 beat HPS, Panchkula by 52 runs.

The Chandigarh Open senior, junior and sub-junior swimming championship would be held in the Panjab University Pool on October 10 and 11, according to a press release. The entries would be taken on the spot.
