
CHANDIGARH, May 12: City hotelier Darshan Singh Kohli, who died on May 11 at the age of 70, was cremated here this afternoon.
Born at Pinnanwal, district Jhelum, now in Pakistan, Kohli was an alumnus of Foreman Christian College, Lahore. He migrated to India at the time of partition, initially settling in Kanpur. In 1954, he came to Chandigarh and bought a commercial building in Sector 22 which he turned into the city8217;s first hotel.
A member of the Communist Party of India in his youth, Kohli was known throughout his life for his ready support to charitable causes and his sympathy for the common man. He was founder member of the Khushdil Club, a group of senior citizens who daily meet in the Sector 10 Leisure Valley. He is survived by his wife, Amrit Kohli, three sons 8212; Brijinder, Manmohan and Rajinder Pal 8212; and a daughter, Ravinder.
