HYDERABAD, OCT 19: People in the coastal regions of Andhra Pradesh on Thursday heaved a sigh of relief as a powerful cyclone over Bay of Bengal weakened into a depression and more than 1.5 lakh evacuated inhabitants of the coastal districts began trekking back to their homes.
The cyclone now lay centred at 150 km south-east off Machilipatnam and was likely to cross the coast by the evening with considerable dissipation, State Chief Secretary P V Rao said.
Over 1.5 lakh people, evacuated by the administration from the low lying areas of Nellore, Prakasm, Guntur and Krishna districts, began moving out of the relief camps for their homes.
"People are returning to their homes. It is a complete normal situation in the coastal belt," Relief Commissioner B C Rosaiah told newsmen here.
Rao, who reviewed the situation at a high-level meeting, said it was decided to withdraw the general warning but the administration was still on alert and the control rooms set up in all coastal district headquarters would function for a few more days to monitor the situation.
Meanwhile, over 60 migratory birds died in Srikakulam district due to heavy rains, lashing coastal plains for the past three days. About 60 pelican chicks fell from their nests due to gale and heavy rains and were washed away in the nearby stream at Talukundi village.
