JAMNAGAR, Nov 18: Its been six months since the cyclone hit Jamnagar city, the surrounding villages and Doordarshan8217;s relay tower. The tower which was damaged in the cyclone is yet to be repaired, depriving the locals of TV programmes.

Says Suresh Bhindoria, assistant engineer of the relay station here, 8220;We have not yet received a new tower to be installed as the replacement for the old one. And so have put a twenty feet broken aerial on the roof of the station8217;s building as a temporarily replacement.8221;

However, the aerial is not even transmitting signals to the radius of one kilometre.

A resident complaints, 8220;Sound can be heard in my TV set but where8217;s the picture? 8220;It is a pity,8221; says another, 8220;The television owners in Jamnagar have to hook their TV sets to cable connections to watch the national network telecast by Doordarshan.8221;

Kantibhai, a Khodiyar colony resident says, 8220;I usually do not like cable connections, but due to poor signals of Doordarshan via aerial for the last six months Ihave to rely on the cable connections. In fact, I have to pay a separate fee for watching the national network.8221;

Sanjeev Mehta, a resident of Patel Colony said, 8220;I did not have cable connection before the cyclone. But now I have been forced to get a cable connection for seeing programmes on Doordarshan.8221;

Kamleshbhai, a businessman and resident of Sarushekshan says, 8220;I didn8217;t have cable connection before because of my children8217;s study. But now, I have no way out but to have a cable connection because of Doordarshan8217;s failure.8221;

Cable operators in the area charge Rs 100 to 150 per month for the connection. But not all can afford it. People residing in Gokulnagar, Vijaynagar, Indira Nagar and those belonging to the lower strata of the society are finding it difficult to sustain the cable connection cost and are hoping that the relay tower is repaired as soon as possible.
