Customs authorities here have busted a smuggling racket — through the international postal system — and seized electronic gadgets including mobile phones, microprocessors and Digital Video Discs (DVDs), worth over Rs 55.23 lakh.

Speaking to mediapersons here today, Customs Commissioner A.P. Sudhir said the consignment was found in eight parcels received in the sub-foreign post office in the city.

The parcels contained stacks of high-value contraband goods, Customs officials said.

Customs authorities have also seized 706 mobile phones of various makes, 1,153 DVDs, 140 Intel microprocessors, 2,370 shaving cartridges and two modems.

The first batch of eight parcels were sent from Kuala Lumpur in Malaysia and Singapore to some fictitious addresses in Bangalore on April 26. More parcels followed, which were declared as old clothing, gifts and food items.

Acting on a tip-off, Customs officials confiscated the parcels and apprehended a person in this connection, who has come up with some clues on the identity of those behind the racket.
