FEBRUARY 8: The 6th Mumbai International Film Festival for Documentary, Short and Animated films (MIFF) wound down today after a hectic week for the 60 foreign delegates and 500 Indian delegates who were rushing from venue to venue to catch the 500 films screened during the fest.

Seminars and workshops were conducted on the global concerns of documentary film makers. A major bug-bear among them is raising money and finding an oulet for the films as a result of a paucity of audiences.

At the seminar on screening documentaries in movie theatres film makers complained that theatres showed either one reel out of two reels or did not show at all. Film industry leader Dossani argued that televison channels should be made to show documentaries as well.

Vijay B Chandra said it was wrong to say that the general public walked out whenever documentaris were screened at theatres. He attributed the lack of audience because of the Films Division’s failure to publicise their documentaries. Richard Raskin, Chairman of the International Video Competition admitted that he did not see a new trend emerging in the video section except that more women have entered their films.
