
CHANDIGARH, MARCH 8: When the public address system announced the names of Prashant Verma and Babita Negi, there was a huge applaud. The duo had won bronze medal in the men’s and women’s categories of the Seventh Commonwealth Judo Championship held at Edinburgh (Scotland). The judokas were honoured with cash awards at a felicitation ceremony, organised by the Chandigarh Sports Council at the Lake Club here today.
Both Babita and Prashant got cash award of Rs 10,000 each from Lt Gen (retd) BKN Chhibber, Governor of Punjab and Administrator, UT, who was chief guest on the occasion.
Apart from the winners in the international meets, the City sportspersons, who had excelled in their respective events at the National and Inter-University level in 1997-98, were given cash awards.
On the occasion, the Chandigarh contingent, which gave an outstanding performance in the recently concluded Fifth National Games held at Manipur, were also felicitated with cash awards. However, the winners during the 1998-1999 are yet to be honoured.
Among the list of honoured, who bagged gold medals in the National Games were Surjit Mann (wrestling), Yashpal Solanki, Prashant Verma and Babita Negi (judo), Nardev Singh, Tejinder Singh, Dalip Kumar, Dalel Khan, Roop Chand and Jatinder Kumar (rowing).
Coaches of the Chandigarh Sports Department and Sports Authority of India (SAI), who are on deputation with the Chandigarh Administration, were also given cash awards for their contribution in grooming the players.
Among others who were present on the occasion were, Jadish Sagar, Advisor to the Chandigarh Administrator, Dr G Vajralingam, Finance Secretary-cum-Secretary Sports, Chandigarh Administration and RK Rao, Director Sports-cum-Secretary, Chandigarh Sports Council.
