One held for idol theft
In a significant development, the J P Road police arrested one Mahiuddin Khurshid Pathan, a resident of Godhra, in connection with the theft of a gold-plated Buddha idol, weighing 3.720 kgs, in Novemeber 1998. According to the police, Pathan and his three associates Salim Babu Pathan, Pramod Phattus Ganesh Bhil and Shebindra Shashank Bhaumik stole the idol and sold it to Dashrath Harman Chauhan, a resident of Vadoara, for Rs 1.30 lakh. However, Chauhan reported the matter to the police, who arrested Pathan from Godhra. According to PI Kiritsinh Jhala, efforts are on to arrest the remaining three accused.

Arrested
The City Police arrested a resident of Vyara on allegations of misappropriating funds of the Surat Jain Rahat Mandal and cheating more than two dozen people to the tune of Rs 4 lakh in the last six months. The complaint was filed by Mandal8217;s trustee Tejanaben Umakant Gandhi.

Guard held
The Karelibaug police have registered a case against a guard of the Bhootadijhapa Remand Home in connection with the escaping of three undertrial children from the Home in July this year. According to police, the three children 8212; Anwar Rafiq, Ashish Arvind and Viram 8212; had escaped by bribing the guard when the superitendent of the remand home Narendrakumar Hiralal Shah was away to Surat. While Ashish was re-arrested from his house in Shinor, the remaining two are still absconding.
