The CPIM on Monday joined the chorus in demanding an explanation from the Government on A R Antulay8217;s controversial remarks over the death of Mumbai ATS chief Hemant Karkare. At the same time, the party also wanted the Centre to allay apprehensions over the fate of the probe into Malegaon blasts which Karkare was handling.

8220;Our opinion is that since a member of the Union Cabinet has made some remarks, it is the duty of the Government to come out with a statement. The more the delay, the more the matter gets complicated,8221; senior CPIM leader Sitaram Yechury said.

However, the CPIM appeared to be divided on the issue. While Politburo member Brinda Karat said that as a minister it was 8220;unnecessary8221; for Antulay to make these statements, party MP A P Abdullakutty came out in support of Antulay.

8220;There is an apprehension among Muslims and non-Muslims alike regarding the circumstances that led to Karkare8217;s death. It should be probed. He had received death threats when his investigation into the Malegaon blasts case was progressing,8221; said Abdullakutty.

Yechury said there was a 8220;genuine apprehension8221; that the investigations into the blasts, which brought out the links of some Hindutva elements, are not going to move further after the killing of Karkare. 8220;The course of investigation undertaken by the ATS must reach its logical conclusion and should not be allowed to drift away,8221; he said.

He added that the 8220;belligerent manner8221; in which the BJP was raising the issue 8220;strengthens the apprehension that the ATS will not proceed with the investigations.
