One week after the outlawed United Liberation Front of Assam ULFA launched a series of attacks on unarmed labourers from Bihar in different districts of Upper Assam, security forces today arrested five members of the outfit. Meanwhile, a dreaded militant laid down arms before the army.

Official sources said while two militants were arrested from near Naohaliya, two others fell in the security forces8217; net at Tingrai. Both places are in the worst-affected Tinsukia district.

A fifth ULFA rebel was picked from Nipunkheti in Lohit district of Arunachal Pradesh, adjacent to Tinsukia district.

Meanwhile, Jaan Bhuyan, alias Jim Chowdang, a Myanmar-trained ULFA member, surrendered before the 29 Assam Rifles at Jairampur in Changlang district of Arunachal. Sources said Bhuyan had walked for 12 days from the ULFA8217;s camps inside Myanmar and surrendered before the Assam Rifles. He also laid down an AK series rifle, a sub-machine gun and some quantity of ammunition.

Bhuyan, sources said, has revealed a lot of vital information about the ULFA8217;s deployment in the Upper Assam districts, which would immensely help the security forces in controlling the rebels. He also revealed that a 60-member contingent of the ULFA was currently undergoing training in Myanmar under guidance of the NSCNK, sources said.
