While the Left8217;s much-awaited note on the UPA8217;s performance over the last two years will not be a major departure from what it has said so far on economic, foreign policy, agriculture and development issues, it will however try to extract an assurance from the UPA at the coordination meeting on Thursday that there must be a conclusive discussion on its key objections.
The note will be sent to the UPA ahead of the coordination meeting, before which leaders of the four Left parties will have another round of discussions. According to a Left leader, the UPA leadership will decide the agenda for the meeting from the note. But the discussions will centre around economic issues.
The Left parties have detailed their objections on the opening up of the banking and insurance sectors, disinvestment, lowering EPF rates and welfare issues. On Tuesday evening, most Left leaders who attended a meeting at the CPM headquarters earlier in the day said the tone of the letter would not be harsh. 8216;8216;It will only be an attempt to try and pin the UPA down on specifics8217;8217;.
However, it was clear after the meeting that the tone would be set by the CPM. The leaders were not allowed to take the draft of the note back with them 8212; it was kept at the CPM headquarters. One Left leader said the note reflected the CPM8217;s dilemma of how far to pursue with a programme of agitation against the UPA given the fact that the party was now leading three Left state governments. The final note will be sent to the UPA on Wednesday.
