The CPM leadership once again heavily criticised the Governor for his Wednesday8217;s remarks on industrialisation.
8220;Empirical evidence has shown that options other than compulsory land acquisition are possible,8221; the Governor had said during a speech in Science City.
On Thursday, transport minister Subhash Chakraborty said the statement is totally unconstitutional.
Chakraborty8217;s argument is that all land is acquired under the Land Acquisition Act of 1894. 8220;How can a Governor show empirical evidences keeping aside the act of the land?8221; he asked.
But if Chakraborty has called him unconstitutional, veterans like Binoy Konar have openly attacked Gandhi. 8220;The Governor seems to be a know-all in all spheres,8221; Konar remarked.
Relations between the ruling party and the Governor had soured since Gandhi lambasted the government after the March 14, 2007, police firing in Nandigram and the recapture of the area in October 2007.
Party leaders like Benoy Konar, Biman Bose and Shyamal Chakraborty had labelled him a mentor of the Trinamool Congress. Now Chakraborty has joined the bandwagon. 8220;We have Governor who almost always holds a different view from the government on all issues,8221; he said, adding for good measure that the agreement between the government and the opposition in presence of the Governor was 8220;illegal8221;.
8220;Land has been acquired in Singur according to the Land Acquisition Act, the High court has upheld the same. If it has been upheld by the High Court as valid, how can there be another agreement?8221;
Chakraborty8217;s cabinet colleague, RSP leader and PWD minister Kshiti Goswami, meanwhile, backed Gandhi.
8220;If they don8217;t get his support, they are peeved by his behaviour,8221; he said. When the Governor had played mediator to resolve the Singur deadlock, the ruling party had welcomed his initiative. 8220;How can an agreement signed in his presence become illegal now?8221;
