MUMBAI, May 18: Thirty-odd canteen employees at the Central Bank of India8217;s main office at Nariman Point are getting the pots and pans in place to run their bank canteen, as per an interim order of the Bombay High Court.
The division bench of Justice B N Srikrishna and S Radhakrishnan has directed the Central Bank management to permit the workers to take over the canteen until the workers8217; petition is disposed of. The judges said this temporary arrangement is to ensure that no worker is left without work and wages.
The workers have also written to the management to complete the formalities for the interim takeover, especially the payment of subsidy which the management pays to every canteen contractor. While the workers claim that the management is yet to respond to the court order, the central office general manager told Express Newsline that 8220;the bank has no objection to handing over the canteen affairs to the employees. The modalities are a matter of time.8221;
The litigation involving the bank8217;scentral office canteen is a prolonged one, dating back to the eighties. Some among the present group of 31 employees joined the staff canteen in 1972, but are still to be put on the rolls.
These workers say the management should consider them as staffers, irrespective of the changing number of canteen contractors. The canteen employees had earlier approached the labour court, industrial court and now the high court with their demand for a permanent staff status and ensuing monetary benefits. The final hearing of the wokers8217; petition on June 15 will finally decide the matter.
