A team of the Panchmahals District police was attacked by villagers and supporters of Minister of State for Religious Places and Cow Protection Prabhatsinh Chauhan on Tuesday after they raided the houses of Chauhan and his son Praveensinh’s in their native village of Melol. Police arrested 10 people, including two of the family on charges of prohibition and rioting.
The police team, led by SP Brajesh Kumar Jha, fired three rounds to disperse the villagers. No one was injured.
DGP in-charge A.K. Bhargava said the team had raided the residence in Melol village and made some seizures. ‘‘Police fired when it came under attack from villagers,’’ said DGP Bhargava. He said the arrested would be booked under Prohibition Act and relevant sections of the IPC for attacking the cops.
Commissioner (Prohibition) R.M.S. Brar said the details of the seizure were not yet available. Minister of State for Home Amit Shah could not be contacted as he was away addressing a public meeting in Ahmedabad. Repeated calls to Prabhatsinh at his Gandhinagar residence went unanswered. His son is absconding.
Police sources said 750 cartons of IMFL bottles worth nearly Rs 14 lakh were seized from the house of the minister’s son. Among the 10 arrested is the minister’s daughter-in-law Suman and grandson Shailesh (14). The arrested were kept in a lock-up at Godhra Taluka PS.
While SP Jha, who led the team, could not be contacted despite repeated efforts, Special IG (Vadodara) Rakesh Asthana refused comment.
