SHILLONG, MARCH 5: A police constable who was playing a cricket match was shot dead during the lunch break in front a large number of spectators here, police said today.

Suspected Hynniewtrep National Liberation Council HNLC activists gunned down Lionel Phawa of Mawlai police station, at Mawlai Madan Heh playground yesterday.

Police said a vehicle entered the field during the lunch break and four youths carrying AK 47 rifles and 9 mm pistols sprayed bullets killing Phawa on the spot. The body bore eight bullet marks.

No arrests have been made so far. A search is on for the suspects, police said.
