Chennai, March 23: The monsoon may be a little far off but goals rained at the Nehru Stadium today, to partially make amends for the searing heat.Karnataka took on a hapless Himachal Pradesh for two full practice sessions. They settled for a 8-0 verdict to open their Cluster D campaign. As if taking the cue, Delhi meted Gujarat a similar treatment in Cluster C. The 4-0 result gave them a place in the quarter-finals of the Bharat Petroleum National football championshiop for the Santosh Trophy.

HP virtually threw in the towel in the opening minute, when the defence made no attempt to thwart Anto Vinod, who took the ball all the way from the centre to the goal.

Everyone took turns to have a crack at the goal, while RC Prakash 3, Dayanand, Rishi Kapoor, Murali, Vinod and Sunil entered the scoresheets.

DELHI HAVE A GOOD TIME: Abhjoy Basu8217;s cross early on had that deceptive look to slice through the Gujarat defence. That set the pattern of the match as it was a virtual siege at the Gujaratend.

Bhupender first-timed it with a cracker of a goal, while Gujarat obliged with a self-goal by Jimmi, headed over a shell-shocked goalkeeper Pious Abraham. Substitute Sanjeev Sharma8217;s header and the opportunism of Bhupender gave that healthy look to the scoreline. A penalty came their way late in the day but Bishwanath Deb8217;s diving save off Dondiyal was the only cheer in Gujarat8217;s cup.
