CHANDRAPUR, NOV 15: In a landmark verdict, the District Consumers Forum sentenced a local jeweller to simple imprisonment of one year for contempt of the forum.

According to the prosecution, Shriniwas Trinekar of Ram Nagar ward, placed an order for some gold ornaments in a jewellery shop owned by Dattatraya Mallewar at Sarafa lane. Although Mallewar promised to keep the ornaments ready on a definite date, Trinekar had to return disappointed after the jeweller failed to keep his word. Trinekar could not obtain the jewellery even after several visits for six months.

Fed up of the inordinately long delay Trinekar lodged a complaint with the District Consumer Forum. The final hearing in the case was completed about three months ago when the president of the consumer forum Telkhande directed Mallewar either to deliver the ornaments or pay compensation of Rs 20,000 to the complainant.
