After the setback with the BSP in Uttar Pradesh and a tie-up getting difficult with the RJD in Bihar, the Congress seemingly gave in to the demands of the NCP in Maharashtra to strike a deal.

The Congress will contest 26 seats and the NCP 18 in the deal announced today. Four seats will be split between the Republican Party of India’s three factions and the Janata Dal (S).

On the concessions, AICC general secretary in-charge of Maharashtra Vayalar Ravi said: ‘‘If we have given them four seats, then they have given us three seats. As the bigger party, we should be more accommodative and there is always give-and-take in an alliance.’’

While Ravi maintains the NCP has given up three seats, Colaba and Rajapur were contested by NCP allies last time. The only seat the NCP has given to Congress is Kopargaon, mainly for accommodating Balasaheb Vikhe Patil, who quit the Shiv Sena to join the Congress. The NCP, which had no presence in Vidarbha’s 11 seats, would be contesting from Bhandara and Washim this time.

It was also announced that Sonia Gandhi and Sharad Pawar would campaign together in Mumbai.
