Close on the heels of the Communist Party of India (CPI) opposing the proposal for charging entry fee from visitors at the Kankaria Lake, the Congress party has come out against the proposal too, and termed it as ‘shameful.’

In a strongly worded statement, AMC Congress leader Surendra Baxi has said that recreation spots like the zoo, children’s garden, aquarium and Naginawadi around the historic lake have been developed for providing wholesome entertainment to city residents.

50 per cent increase in property tax in the name of development, is both unreasonable and shameful,” said Baxi.

It is not proper to charge an entry fee at the Kankaria Lake when, visitors

anyway have to buy tickets for the zoo, children’s garden and the aquarium, he said.

“The AMC has got adequate resources and therefore levying entry tax is totally uncalled for,” he added.
