CHANDIGARH, AUG 31: Disseminating the concept of computer war-gaming and the use of simulators for training down to unit levels, the Army is set to introduce a computerised tool for tactical training at the level of sub-unit commanders.
Designated the Infantry Company Commander8217;s Tactical Trainer INFCOTT, it has been developed under the aegis of the Shimla-based Army Training Command ARTRAC, with experts drawn from the Defence Research and Development Organisation, the Infantry School and the College of Combat.
The introduction of simulators and interactive technology for training at different tactical and strategic levels comes in the backdrop of the Army going in for a fundamental overhaul of its training techniques in the face of changing warfare concepts, revolutionary changes in technology at all levels, and above all, the severe resource crunch which has severely affected operational and training activities.
Army sources say that INFCOTT will be used for training junior officers in planning and executing the deploying of an infantry rifle company for defence in a given tactical situation as well as for training to fight a successful defensive battle under different combat situations.
quot; The software incorporated in the training system has the capability to assess the competence of defensive deployment against an attack by a battalion level formation supported by armour and artillery, quot; an informed source commented.
INFCOTT, sources add, is based on a digital map of semi-desert terrain, projecting an area of 25 x 28 kilometer. The system8217;s software has the facility to quot;doctorquot; the terrain to inject the characteristics and features of plains as well as desert terrain. The software was developed using quot;object- oriented methodologyquot; in C and QJMA to resolve combat outcome.
