PUNE, July 10: Director General of Service Tax G S Tampi on Friday announced that the government will soon introduce a comprehensive service tax aimed at covering almost all areas except crucial services in next six years. Presently, it is being administered through excise department.
Addressing an open house meeting organised by the Mahratta Chamber of Commerce and Industries (MCCI), Tampi said as the commodity taxation had reached a saturation point, the government had to explore other possible avenues including the service tax.
Tampi explained that although the prosecution procedures have been removed, the penal provision have been retained.
