BERHAMPUR, MARCH 20: Timely intervention by the Raikia police in Kandhamal district helped avert a possible communal clash at Rudangia village on Friday.
According to Deputy Inspector General (Southern Range) Sanjiv Marik, a group of adivasis detained a member of a particular community who had purchased some cows from the weekly market on Thursday, alleging that he was taking them for slaughter.
Although the man was later released, he lodged a police complaint as the cows were not handed over to him. When police asked the adivasis to return the animals, they demanded that the purchase of cows by the minority community be banned and the person be handed over to them.
Kandhamal Superintendent of Police S S Hansda arrived at the scene with armed police while a platoon of armed police from Ganjam was sent there. The DIG said the situation was under control.
A large number of adivasis congregated near the Rudangia panchayat.
