Colon cleansing may prove harmful

Mores come and go in many spheres of human activity 8211; including healthcare. One such trend that seems to have returned with some vigour is the business of colon cleansing, with cleansing diets and colon scrubs getting increasingly popular.

The USP of a cleansing programme is detoxification 8212; touted as a panacea. And I am often caught trying to resolve matters with patients.

Thankfully, the cleansing diets may not be as responsible for trouble as the other cleansing procedures, which claim to remove toxins, boost energy levels and brace the immune system.

Attractive as the claims may be, the touted advantages of colon cleansing are mostly non-existent and the procedure may even prove harmful. The colon does not require special diets/ pills/ enemas for cleansing. In fact, the colon is naturally endowed with the ability to remove wastes from the body. Many of the colon cleansing plans can do harm by disturbing the salt-water balance of the body.

The colon8217;s job is to absorb water and electrolytes in order to maintain a required balance. Thus some of the aggressive cleaning can lead to dehydration. Those on long-term programmes of detoxification may even end up being anaemic or malnourished.

What is required for effective and natural cleansing is a high fibre diet insoluble variety and adequate water. This may not be easy, given the kind of eating habits that we tend to have. To meet the fibre requirements fibre one needs to include the following items in diet regularly: Oats, BarleyJau, a variety of lentils and green leafy vegetables.
