Cold wave conditions intensified across northern India today, killing 11 people in Uttar Pradesh since Thursday, while lakes and rivers in higher ranges of Himachal Pradesh froze and triggered icy winds in other parts of the region.
Dense fog continued to envelope large areas of UP, Punjab, Haryana, Rajasthan and Delhi, disrupting traffic, movement of trains and flights and throwing normal life out of gear.
Three persons each died in Ballia and Mau while one each died in Jaunpur, Basti, Bhadohi, Azamgah and Kushinagar due to cold, sources said.
Bareilly, recording seven degrees celsius, was the coldest place in UP, while the state capital shivered at eight degrees, the met office said. The snow and rain forecast in the hills of Uttaranchal till tomorrow could aggravate the cold conditions.
The twin tribal valleys of Lahaul, Spiti and Pangi valley in Chamba shivered as minimum temperature ranged between minus 10 and minus 22 degrees celsius, met office said.
