Even as the Marxists created a record by forming the government for the seventh consecutive time, Chief Minister Buddhadeb Bhattacharjee set his own record. He won by 58,130 votes, a margin not achieved by any Chief Minister of West Bengal so far.

In the 2001 Assembly polls, Buddhadeb had defeated Trinamool Congress candidate Madhabi Mukherjee by 29,281 votes. But this time, the victory margin doubled as he swept past Trinamool candidate Dipak Kumar Ghosh.

It was celebration time in the CM8217;s constituency of Jadavpur. Party supporters thronged the streets, renting the air with slogans like 8216;8216;Buddhadeber Khamata, dekhe jaa re Mamata Mamata, you have seen Buddhadeb8217;s power8217;8217;.

8216;8216;The Opposition always accused us of rigging but they will be shut now. It has been proved that the people of Bengal wanted us back,8217;8217; said Sattabrata Sur Roy, office secretary of the Gangulybagan CPIM office.

8216;8216;We are here because of him and we always want him to win,8217;8217; said Gayatri Purkayastha, a paan vendor. As cadres roamed around in the party colour, smearing and getting smeared in red-coloured powder, even housewives left their daily chores to take part in the celebrations.
