Chief Minister Buddhadeb Bhattacharjee is under pressure from top CPIM leaders to remove Police Commissioner Prasun Mukherjee and two of his deputy commissioners who are said to have coerced graphic designer Rizwanur Rehman to break off his marriage with businessman Ashok Todi8217;s daughter Priyanka.

CPIM Central Committee member and MP Md Salim on Wednesday said the Government should remove the three officers to facilitate a transparent inquiry. 8220;The Government should ensure a fair, transparent and honest inquiry,8221; Salim said. He had earlier visited Rizwanur8217;s home and promised justice to his mother.

Senior leaders feel that popular opinion is against DC Headquarters Gyanwant Singh and DC Detective Department Ajay Kumar for trying to intervene in the marriage on behalf of Todi. After Rizwanur8217;s body was discovered on September 21, it came to light that these DCs, along with two other juniors, even tried to intimidate Rizwanur.

On September 27, the CM ordered a judicial inquiry, which will run parallel to another inquiry being conducted by the Criminal Investigation Department CID. Although there is no evidence that the police chief was involved directly, he did try to shield his juniors at a press conference held by him soon after Rizwanur8217;s death.

A senior CPIM leader said: 8220;Why should the Commissioner try to shield his officers unless he was aware that something was amiss?8221; Salim said: 8220;Since a judicial inquiry has been ordered, I do not want to comment if the CP was trying to cover any of his officers.8221; CPIM State Secretary Biman Bose has also admitted that senior policemen harassed Rizwanur.
