New Delhi, December 10: The Government today said the proposed visit of American President Bill Clinton to India was without any pre-conditions and it would lead to increased interest of US investors in Indian economy.

External Affairs Minister Jaswant Singh told the Upper House in a written reply that the US Government had stated that Clinton intended to visit India in the early part of the year 2000.

8220;The US Government has also indicated in its statements that there are no pre-conditions for the proposed visit, quot; Singh said in reply to a question by CPM member E Balanandan if the visit was designed to ensure that India sign CTBT.

Singh said the programme and agenda for the visit of the US President would be decided through mutual consultations, after the dates were agreed upon by both the sides.

quot;It is our understanding that the visit would lead to enhancement of interest by US investors in various sectors of the Indian economy as well as provide impetus to mutually beneficial cooperation, quot; he added.

To a question whether the Government had been apprised of the areas in which US investment is likely to be stepped up consequent to Clinton8217;s visit, Singh said US investments would be welcome in all priority areas as defined by national policies and relevant laws on foreign investment.

To another question he said there are 24 Indian nationals lodged in various jails in Myanmar.
