A clash erupted on Tuesday evening when officials of the Surat Municipal Corporation SMC went to demolish a Hanuman temple on an SMC reserved plot near the Deepmala complex at Palanpur Patia in the Rander area. Local residents resorted to stone pelting and injured two engineers in the process. Finally the temple was demolished under police protection.
The SMC officials had earlier intimated the residents to shift the temple to some other place. Even after the lapse of sufficient time, the temple was not shifted, and Zonal Officer M D Daruwala went to the spot with his staff today to demolish the illegal construction.
Seeing the SMC staff with bulldozers and trucks, the society residents gathered at the spot and started pelting stones. The Rander police immediately rushed to the spot and dispersed the mob. The injured engineers were treated at a nearby hospital.
A complaint has now been lodged with the Rander police station.
Daruwala said: 8220;The temple was constructed on a reserved SMC land. We had earlier given intimation to the society residents to shift the temple to some other place and had even given them sufficient time, but they failed to do so. Through our sources we learnt that they wanted to illegally grab the land using the temple as a pretext. The situation is under control and we have lodged a complaint in this regard.8221;
