Wide-eyed awareness
In an economy where the consumer is most definitely not the king, getting to know your consumer rights is all the more significant. In an effort to create this awareness amongst young people, the Grahak Peth has been working with the Government to introduce consumer rights and duties as a subject. And this has finally borne fruit as ten universities in Maharashtra have agreed to make consumer rights a compulsory subject. In Kolhapur, the open university has introduced a 15-day certificate course on the subject.
In Nagpur, it is a 100-mark paper. This awareness will also be taken to school students from this month onwards in 4000 schools state-wide. Says Bindu Madhav Joshi of Grahak Peth, 8220;We even plan to take this to schools and by September end this education will have reached 15 lakh students, five lakh in the cities and 10 lakh in the rural areas of Maharashtra.8221; So, now when a kid buys a 200-page school book, the shopkeeper sure will have to explain why the book has just 192 pages. After all, by then, he will have become aware of his rights.
