SURAT, July 22: Members of the Surat City and District Congress submitted a memorandum to Police Commissioner Maniram on Wednesday, demanding action against increasing attacks and loots on diamond workshop owners.

Led by Kadir Pirzada, GPCC vice-president, the delegation demanded to know as to why the police had not taken steps to curb occurrence of these instances, which they alleged had registered a spurt in the past few months.

The delegation claimed that the Mahidharpura police station was the most vulnerable to attacks. They alleged that criminals were having a free run and that diamond traders were being looted at will.

Expressing concern over the attacks, Pirzada stated that if the police failed to stop armed robberies, more than 2 lakh workers connected with the industry would soon be rendered jobless.

Pointing out that even senior police officials admitted that police inspectors often secured transfer orders from the Home Department, affecting policing, the leaders demanded that it was the people8217;s right to know what factors governed police transfers in the city.

The delegation included Congress councillor Bhupendra Solanki, Umesh Mehta, Pratap Kantharia, Sanjay Patwa, Jayesh Kantharia, Pravin Chauhan and other party workers.
