PUNE, May 14: Rebutting reports on the alarming rise of crime in the city, Police Commissioner A K Agarwal, criticised the citizens, who according to him “expect the police to do everything, without taking any effort themselves.”

In an exclusive interview with The Indian Expresspolice chief underlined the need for people’s participation in effectively curbing crime. “No significant or alarming rise in crimes has been witnessed in Pune in the recent past. No doubt, the crime in the first four months of this year has increased a little compared to the corresponding period last year. However, things are under control,” he said .

While describing the police as people in uniform’ and the citizens as policemen in plain clothes’, Agarwal urged the public to be vigilant and safety-conscious.

“It would be a great help in curbing crime even if people tip off the police about unusual movements in their vicinities,” he said, while praising the presence of mind shown by the victims in a dacoity at Hadapsar on Monday.
