CID man held in extortion case

AHMEDNAGAR, Aug 12: Sanjay Jadhav, a CID head constable in Mumbai, who allegedly helped former MLA Shahajibapu Patil in an extortion case involving a local builder, was today remanded to six day8217;s police custody. Jadhav was picked up from Mumbai by a police team attached to the Tophkhana police station, early this morning.

Former Congress MLA from Sangola district Solapur Shahajibapu Patil along with one of his accomplices was earlier arrested from a Pune hotel and remanded to police custody on Thursday. The police also had recovered Rs 1.54 lakh from them, it was stated.

The MLA and three others including the Mumbai sleuth have been charged with extorting huge sums from a city contractor Gopinath Mandge by threatening him.

Construction contractors Ravindra Patil and Vinod alias Balsaheb Wagh are the other accused in this case. Police had swung into action following Mandge8217;s complaint and had arrested Wagh.

Meanwhile, one of the accused Vinod Wagh has also lodged a complaint with the police, stating that builder Mandge duped him after collecting money from him for registering his Wagh8217;s name as a government contractor.

In his complaint, Mandge has stated that on Sunday, he was approached by four persons posing as CID officers. They accused Mandge of indulging in several irregularities and of cheating a large number of persons. After threatening the builder, the foursome took him to a hotel where Mandge was shown an identity card of Maharashtra Legislative Assembly member Advocate Shahajibapu Patil.

During this meeting, the builder was 8220;interrogated8221; about his business transactions by Jadhav, the CID head constable, allegedly at gun point. Mandge was asked questions about how he had amassed his property. The information provided by Mandge was recorded by Ravindra Patil, the complainant said.

During the meeting, the four persons allegedly demanded Rs 25 lakh to settle the matter.

According to Mandge he gave the them Rs 50,000 and assured to give the rest of the amount later and gave them Rs 2 lakh, the next day.

While the accused were still threatening Mandge, he lodged a complaint with the Tophkhana police. A trap was laid and when Wagh again approached the builder seeking more amount, he was nabbed.

On the basis of the information gathered from Wagh, the Tophkhana police laid another trap to arrest the former MLA and Ravindra Patil. Mandge along with the plainclothesmen approached the hotel in Pune8217;s Mangalwar peth and presented the accused with a packet which he told the Patil duo was containing the rest of the amount.

The police team, led by police inspector Mandaleshwar Kale later arrested the duo. The police has also conducted video shooting of their raid.
