Chirag lands a double blow

Among the fighters to impress were Vikram Gohil of St Sebastian and Jaydeep Kadam of Shailendra Education.

Both fought each other in the under-16 age and under-45 kg category. Gohil, a southpaw, had the reach and a effective left-straight with which he repeatedly hurt his opponent. While both boxers exhibited decent footwork, Jaydeep Kadam displayed better movement. But Kadam had virtually no attack and was left to defend almost through the bout. He picked up steam in the third round but not before receiving a standing count in the first round. However, the verdict predictably went to Gohil.

Chirag, who entered thefinal of this category, meets Aftab Ahmed of Christ Church. Aftab showed quick movement and looked keen to fight in his bout against Steven D’Souza. Steven received a cut above his upper lip but continued to fight bravely and lasted the distance. Aftab won the bout.

Andrew’s, Garcia in final
ST Andrew’s, Bandra upstaged defending champions Chinai in a penalty shoot-out 3-1 this evening and booked a berth in the final of the Goan Sports Association’s Inter Collegiate Football Championship.

With both teams drawing a blank at full-time, the encounter spilled into a tie-breaker where St Andrew’s goalkeeper Arveen Thakur displayed his mettle. Thakur affected three saves and blocked Chinai’s further foray in the competition. Thakur, Anil Rajak and Jairzinho Siero found the target for the winners while William Soares was the lone scorer for Chinai.

St Andrew’s will lock horns with Garcia, Vasai who pipped NM College 1-0. NM’s goalkeeper Denzil Aranbhan messed a collection the last minute and also his team’s chances when a powerful Roshan Das’ shot slipped throughhis hands into the goal.

Namrata Goyal shines
Namrata Goyal scored 10 points, the only hoopster to return double figures today, as Villa Theresa B defeated St Joseph’s, Bandra 23-10 in the under-16 girls event of the MSSA-Colgate inter-school basketball tournament at School Sports Centre, Azad Maidan.
