Describing as an 8216;error8217; the NDA government8217;s decision to recognise Tibet as a part of China, former Defence Minister George Fernandes has said the Communist nation was 8220;potential threat number one8221; to India and flayed the UPA dispensation for allowing it to be 8216;bullied8217;.
Venting anger over the Tibet crisis and India8217;s response to it, the NDA leader said the Olympic torch should not be allowed to come to India and that he had asked his 8216;colleagues8217; and others to make 8216;whatever effort8217; to prevent the flame8217;s run in this country.
8220;It was not a mistake but an error. It should not have been done,8221; he said about India8217;s decision to recognise Tibet as part of China during the previous Atal Bihari Vajpayee Government in which he was the Defence Minister.
Fernandes told Karan Thapar8217;s Devil8217;s Advocate programme on CNN-IBN that China is 8220;still potential threat number one8221; and 8220;could become an enemy8221;, as he recalled his statement on similar lines 10 years back.
Commenting on the recent incident of Indian Ambassador Nirupama Rao being summoned by the Chinese Foreign Ministry past midnight, Fernandes said New Delhi had 8220;surrendered8221; over the issue.
8220;Well, our government allowed it. It has no shame,8221; he said, adding that the government should have advised its envoy to wait till the next day. 8220;Elsewhere that8217;s what would have happened.8221;
Rao was summoned past midnight to register concern over breach of security at Chinese Embassy here.
8220;India has sold out to China,8221; he alleged. Asked whether India was being 8220;bullied8221; by China, Fernandes replied 8220;absolutely, and it accepts it.8221;
