MUMBAI, MAY 22: Alarmed by the possibility of his unceremonious removal, State Chief Secretary P Subrahmanyam today called on Shiv Sena supremo Bal Thackeray to plead his case.

According to sources, Chief Minister Narayan Rane had informed the Chief Secretary on Friday that he was to be replaced by Additional Chief Secretary Arun Bongirwar, an IAS official of the 1966 batch.

Ever since his appointment Subrahmanyam has had problems with the Shiv Sena. However, in view of the massive support he enjoyed in BJP, particularly the backing of Deputy Chief Minister Gopinath Munde, the Sena did not press for his transfer.

When Rane took over, he personally took up the issue with Munde. According to a senior minister in the State Cabinet, both the alliance partners met on Friday and decided to replace Subrahmanyam with Bongirwar, a former additional chief secretary to the then chief minister Manohar Joshi.

When it was pointed out that Bongirwar would supersede at least two additional chief secretaries, VRanganathan and K C Srivastav, the minister said they will be accommodated elsewhere.
