Raipur, November 27The Raman Singh Government on Tuesday introduced the Chhattisgarh State Language Amendment Bill 2007 in the Assembly seeking to provide official language status for the Chhattisgarhi dialect.

The Bill was introduced by the state Tourism and Culture Minister Brij Mohan Agrawal who stated that the government was trying to fulfil the aspirations of the common people by proposing an official language status to Chhattisgarhi. “Once the language Bill is passed, people in our state will also be able to use their local language in official works,” the Minister added.

However, the Congress legislators while welcoming the move, doubted the government’s intentions on seeking an official status for the dialect in the final year of its term. “Why didn’t the Raman Singh government remember to seek such a status in the first year of its term itself?” questioned Congress legislator Satya Narayan Sharma.

Bhupesh Baghel, another Congress leader, too pointed out that their government had already passed a resolution seeking official language status for Chhattisgarhi during their last term.
