A fast-track court in Bhagalpur today framed charges against JD(U) MP Prabhunath Singh and others in four different cases relating to murder and attempt to murder.

On May 26, the court had framed charges against the MP in another case relating to the murder of two persons. First of the four cases in which charges were framed today relates to the murder of gun trader Ajay Singh in 1992 under Chhapra police station of Saran district. Prabhunath’s brother Deenanath Singh, a JD (U) MLA, is also an accused in the case.

The second one concerns an attempt to murder then Janata Dal MLA Ashok Singh in 1991. The third one relates to the murder of Rajnarain Singh and Keshri Rai on March 7, 1992 under the Mashrakh police station of Saran district. In the fourth case, the MP has been charged with kidnapping and murdering four members of then Indian People’s Party (now CPI-ML) at Mashrakh in 1994.

The JD(U) strongarm from Maharajganj was present in court when the charges were framed. He said that he had been falsely implicated in all the cases.

The MP had recently raised a banner of revolt in the party alleging that he was being disregarded in major party decisions. The real reason according to insiders however was to create pressure on Chief Minister Nitish Kumar to clear his name from the different criminal cases. His tempers were cooled after a long meeting with Nitish Kumar.
