Polls likely in September
The Election Commission is likely to ignore the government8217;s demand for early polls and go ahead with its plan to hold general elections in September, along with the Assembly elections due in nine states. The EC has put forward primarily two reasons for delaying the polls. First, that it has begun a process of updating the electoral rolls to enroll all voters over the age of 18 years. This exercise would be completed only by July 20. Secondly, it believes it makes eminent administrative and financial sense for Nirvachan Sadan to club the general elections with the Assembly polls.
