40 file income tax returns
Forty persons filed their income tax returns during an awareness camp organised by the Income Tax Department in the Sector 21 market, here today.The department has collected Rs 30,000 from tax returns filed mostly by the auto dealers and traders, during the camp which was inaugurated by Y R Saini, Deputy Commissioner, Income Tax. The next such camp will be held at Sadar Bazar, Sector 19, an official said.
Revised pay structure flayed
The Ministerial Staff Association Engineering Wing, Municipal Corporation in its executive meeting held today has condemned the recommendations of the fourth Punjab pay commission notifying revised pay scales of Class IV as well as clerks/JDM8217;s. The general secretary of the association, Harbhajan Singh has stated that the association has also resolved to support the demands of the joint action committee.
Kajheri residents hold rally
The Jhuggi wasi sangarsh samiti has decided to take out a rally onJanuary 15 to voice the demands of jhuggi dwellers of various colonies of Kajheri. According to the chief convenor, Manjit Kaur, the procession shall start from Kajheri barrier at 10 am and after passing through Attawa crossing, Sector 22-23 lights, stadium crossing, it will terminate at the Sector 17 piazza at 12.30 pm. They will also present a memorandum to Advisor to the administrator containing their demands.
Bank to launch contact programme
The Sanawar branch of the State Bank of Patiala has decided to launch mass contact programmes from January 17 at a number of villages surrounding the branch with a view to inculcate the spirit of banking the among local people. According to S.C. Dhall, manager of the bank, a team of officers and staff members will visit Garkhal, Moticona and other villages to enhance customers8217; knowledge of the extent of services they are entitled to.

The executive body of the Parent Teacher Association of Government Model Senior Secondary School, Sector 35, has appealed to the Chandigarh Administration to refix the teacher to taught ratio at 1:40 instead of 1:60. The secretary of the association, M N Shukla has pointed out in a release that the shortage of teachers is affecting the performance of students. They have also demanded to fill all vacancies.
Protest against Periphery Act planned
The Action Committee for the Development of Villages, Chandigarh, and the Anti-Periphery Action Committee, Punjab, have decided to stage a protest dharna on January 22 at the Housing Board Chowk, Sector 17 at 11 am. The demands of the committees include abolition of the Periphery Act and provision of basic amenities to the inhabitants of the villages. A decision has been taken to take out quot;paidal marchquot; in Maloya, Palsora and Kajheri villages on January 14, Saranpur, Dhanas and Dadumajra village on January 15, Khuda Alisher, Khuda Jassu and Lahora villages on January 16.
Bank8217;s timings extended

The State Bank of India, Industrial Estate branch, has extended its business hours with effect from January 6. According to a press release issued by the chief manager of the branch, new timings will be: 10 am to 2.15 pm, 2.45 pm to 3.45 pm except on Saturday, Sunday and holidays. On Saturday the bank will deal with the public from 10 am to 12.30 am.
College staff threaten stir
Class IV employees of the local Home Science College, Sector 10, have threatened to launch an agitation from January 21 if their demands are not acceded to by the college authorities. In a press statement, the general secretary of the Class IV Government Employees Union, Tarachand Kashyap has stated that they have made numerous representations to the college authorities in this regard.
IIT JEE, AFMC dates clash
Students appearing in the Joint Entrance Examination of IIT and the entrance examination of Armed Force Medical College, Pune, have complained that the date of entrance examinations is clashing. In a press statement issued here, they have requested the institutions to reschedule their examinations.
Scooter stolen from Sector 9
Manjeet Kaur, a resident of Sector 11, reported to the police that her scooter, Kinetic Honda CH01S 1312 was stolen from Sector 9, on Monday. The police have registered a case of theft under Section 379 of the IPC.
Two men hurt in road accidents

Ram Prakash, a resident of Sector 21, was reportedly injured after his scooter was hit by a military truck near the railway crossing in Manimajra on Monday afternoon. In another accident Vinod Kumar, a cyclist was hurt after he was hit by a scooter in Sector 32, late last night. Both were admitted to PGI, the police sources added.

Monika, 16, a resident of Sector 16, reportedly attempted to commit suicide by consuming an insecticide at her residence this afternoon. She was rushed to the General Hospital in Sector 16, where her condition is stated to be out of danger, the police said.
