ST. JOHN8217;S, June 13: A neck injury may prevent Shivnarine Chanderpaul from taking part in the first cricket Test between West Indies and Sri Lanka, which opens at the Recreation Ground today.
The 22-year-old Chanderpaul hurt his neck when he fell in taking catch during a Red Stripe Cup match for Guyana in Kingston more than a fortnight ago.
The injury was enough to stop him from contesting the limited overs international against the same opponents in Port-of-Spain a week earlier. If Chanderpaul is not fit, Floyd Reifer, the 24-year-old tall, upright left-hander from Barbados and this year8217;s top batsman in the Red Stripe Cup, will fill the void and make his Test debut.
The match could be extra special for Curtly Ambrose, the beanpole fast bowler, who has spearheaded the attack for almost a decade since his Test debut in 1988 against Pakistan, in which time he has played 69 Tests and has taken 295 wickets at 21.70 apiece.
Five wickets in the match will make him only the fourth West Indian to capture 300 wickets in Tests.
With limited resources, Sri Lanka will be trying to find the right combination to make the match competitive. With right-arm fast medium bowler Nuwan Zoysa having to return home because of back troubles, the touring party has been reduced to 14 and the bowling, compromised by the loss of left-arm fast bowler Chaminda Vaas for the same reason, appears even thinner.TEAMS: West Indies from: C Walsh captain, S Campbell, S Williams, S Chanderpaul, B Lara, C Hooper, R Holder, F Reifer, C Browne, I Bishop, C Ambrose, F Rose, M Dillon.
