A dinner on the terrace is hardly a thing to warm up to when evenings are getting chillier. But what if sizzling lamb sambouseks are spread out in temperature-controlled canopies decked with velvet and cosy lounge sofas? The newly opened terrace called Meze at Manre restaurant does that and a little more — it even reminds you of the erstwhile Olive Bar & Kitchen at Mehrauli, with its dangling chandeliers and soft glow of candle lights.

One corner has three private dens while the other end has a tent that accommodates several tables and low-lying sofas. Huge mirrors cover up most of the walls, while a kiss of maroon and purple tones add a little contrast. Food is not the stylish nouvelle plates that Manre offers. The menu rolls out a mix of Turkish and Arabic food paired with an extensive selection of drinks.

We begin with vegetarian and non-vegetarian grill platters. A black plate brings six portions of three different kebabs along with several dips including hummus, the chickpea dip that accompanies most Med meals, mahummara, a hot pepper dip spiked with olives and tomatoes, and a delicious garlic and cheese dip.

Our order of popular Iranian Chelo Kebabs (Rs 550) fetches three bars of flattened seekh kebab-like rolls along with a stack of fresh garden salad and fragrant rice. We pair it with a balmy cup of chamomile, although the staff in attendance would have rather preferred us ordering a Mezetini, a heady stir of vodka with Arabian spices, which, we are told, goes best with the dish. Lamb Sambousek (Rs 350), with triangles of crispy pastries generously stuffed with minced lamb, is best for a nippy evening. We also tried Kibbeah Shameyieh (Rs 300) that offers egg-shaped meatballs with cracked wheat and onions.

Meze also pampers with an interesting list of vegetarian options. Pick from Falafel (Rs 300), Cheese Sambousek (Rs 300), paper thin pouches filled with cheese and parsley, or a scrumptious vegetable skewer that comes buttoned with mushrooms, peppers and potatoes.
