MUMBAI, March 3: Dominic D8217; Costa8217;s last-minute corner helped Century Rayon denied hosts Goan Sports Association victory in the Veteransquot; football tournament organised at the Cross Maidan, today.

A panicky Goan defence fell prey to Dquot;Costa8217;s curling flag-kick and conceded a self-goal in the ensuing melee.

William Mendonca put Goans ahead a minute earlier after Mahindrasquot; coach, international Deryck de Sousa took a free kick from the top of the box. Using his famous toe-kick, the striker par excellence in his hey day, sent a curler which had custodian SK Bose fumbling. Mendonca grabbed the chance, finding the net from close range.

Century Rayon dominated the mid-field in which Dquot;Costa, Puspakant Karkera and Rosario Antao struck a fine rhythm. The trio worked hard near the Goan box but were denied further chances by the opponentsquot; defence comprising Trimorthy Periera, Cajentan Noronha and Narayan Poojari.

One attack saw Rayon8217;s Antao lobbing just a little too strongly over Peter D8217;silva, the Goancustodian.

Playing earlier, Orkay were held goalless by Bombay Customs. Orkay should have won by at least two goals on the run of play. International Bernard Periera, the ever-threatening striker, failed to direct two headers home in the second-half.

Customs spurned a couple of chances but fine goalkeeping by Shekar Bangera kept Orkay8217;s goal intact. Orkay8217;s defence of Andrew CP, Koya Amza and Remy Fernandes did well to keep Customsquot; strike force comprising Carlisto Periera, Laxman Karkera and Felix Cardoz at bay.

The day8217;s last match between Central Railway and Rashtriya Chemical Factory RCF produced its share of action and oddity in a 1-1 draw. First, the referee turned up late. But Central Railway striker C D8217;silva wolf-whistled the match off even as the official headed towards the centre-line!The railwaymen went ahead through a beautiful executed volley from C D8217;silva from the top of the box which gave RCF8217;s international custodian Bhaskar Maity no chance. A spectacular save from Central8217;scustodian Assumption Varella, stretching full length to his left to thwart a volley from RCF Sushil Kumar in the first-half, preserved the lead.

But Sushil beat Varella in the second half when he dispatched a 25-yard volley straight into the net.

Sushil failed with another chance, shooting wide when well placed. As the minutes ticked by, RCF held the Central strike-force which included dangerman Francis Fernandes, Shaikh Salim and L Machado.
