Keeping in mind the increasing number of trauma cases and the importance of 8220;golden hour8221;, the Ministry of Health and Family Welfare proposes to start a course in emergency medicine in all medical colleges and institutions of the country.

The 8220;golden hour8221; is the first one hour after the incident. If the required emergency treatment is provided in this period, most trauma victims are said to have a high chance of survival. But many patients lose their life due to unavailability of experts during this time.

8220;The Central Government has approved amendment to the MCI, Post-graduate Medical Education Regulations, 2000, to start MD emergency medicine,8221; added a senior ministry official.

At present, all Government medical colleges and institutions provide certain short-term courses on handling emergency cases. 8220;This is one of the ways to streamline things at such a crucial level,8221; added the official.

Under this course, students would be taught a bit of all specialities, including medicine, orthopaedics, surgery, cardiology, neurology and anaesthesia. 8220;A lot of time is wasted in moving a patient from the emergency room to the other department. With the emergency medicine department, patients would be given all possible treatment at one place,8221; said Dr Anil Sharma, spokesperson, Resident Doctor Association, AIIMS.
