AMBALA, MARCH 23: Former Union communications minister and senior BJP leader Sushma Swaraj today said the dispute between Punjab and Haryana over the Sutlej-Yamuna Link Canal SYL would be solved with the mediation of the Central government, which she said was capable of solving this vexed issue.

The former Delhi chief minister was here on a one-day visit to inaugurate a public school, set up by an enterprising lady Deepika Viyogi, to be run in the rural area. She also released a book written by noted Hindi writer Dr L. D. Viyogi on this occasion.

In an informal interaction with mediapersons, the former minister regretted that earlier government did not take the initiative to solve the dispute between the two states over the distribution of Ravi and Sutlej waters.

She said Haryana Chief Minister Bansi Lal had taken up the matter regarding Badal8217;s statement on SYL and the Prime Minister had assured him that the matter would be looked into. The Prime Minister also promised to solve the Sutlej-Yamuna Link Canal dispute within the stipulated time.

Shushma said the political parties issued their statements to protect the interests of their respective states but the Centre should search for appropriate solutions in the wider perspective of national interest. She regretted the opposition stalled the passage of Bills brought in the Lok Sabha for public interest. She pointed out that perturbed by the governmet8217;s achievements opposition was trying to tarnish government8217;s imag.
